When biotite or phlogopite weather or hydrothermally altered, vermiculite is formed, which is a hydrous phyllosilicate. Vermiculite significantly expands when it is heated. Vermiculite is a 2:1 composition of clay, where it consists of one octahedral sheets and two tetrahedral sheets. When felsic and mafic or ultramafic rock come into contact, the alteration occurs in vermiculite.

Vermiculite is used in numerous ways:-

  • It is moulded into different shapes which are later used in open fireplaces, fireproofing of pipes and structured steel, insulation against high temperature.
  • In manufacturing calcium silicate boards, brake linings, as a soilless growing medium.
  • Vermiculite is also used in germination of seeds.
